Bad cat behaviors that you need to break.

Several cat behaviors are not acceptable, however, much depends on your lifestyle and whether you live in the city or country.

One of the worst cat behaviors is scratching humans. Cat is small, furry, but still it is the predator. Dangerous cats' claws can inflict nasty scratches, so this is one behavior that should be discouraged as much as possible. Do not think that it is possible to eliminate it entirely, as it is a cat's nature to scratch and it does so to protect itself. Most important is to make sure your cat is not frightened and never feels threatened - this will prevent scratching you or other family members.

Spraying is also bad behavior that is highly unwelcome in the home. This is simply a natural thing for them to do, because cats spray to mark their territory. One way to discourage this behavior is to buy a bottle of cat’s pheromone. It is a synthetic cat spray and is odorless to humans, but cats can smell it. If your cat thinks another cat has marked out its territory, then it won't be so likely to do the same thing.

It's not a very nice thing to be cuddled up to kitty only to have him unexpectedly sink his teeth into your arm. Yet biting is also a natural cat behavior. If your cat is a biter, discourage him by placing him on the floor immediately when he bites. It may be that he had finished with cuddling anyway and this was his way of letting you know. If his biting seems excessive, you may need to keep that rolled up newspaper handy. He will soon understand not to bite.

Jumping onto high places is natural cat behavior, but it may not fit in with your lifestyle if you have antique vases sitting on shelves. Neither is it healthy to have kitty on the counter while you are preparing food for the children. Cats can be a danger to themselves as well as to others when they jump unexpectedly onto places that may not support them.

It goes without saying that you will want your cat to use the litter tray. If he does not, he may have to become an outside cat.

Hunting is another behavior natural for cats. We appreciate if they catch mice and rats, but when kitty comes in licking feathers from his jowls, we wonder if that little bird was amongst those facing extinction. A bell on his collar will help to prevent kitty from killing too many birds.

Kitten training – how to gain respect of your cat.

When you decide to keep an animal as a pet, there are some basic rules
that should be established, because you are human and your territory is not your cat’s natural territory. Keep in mind that all animals kept as pets still behave as animals - no matter if they live in your elegant apartment.

Getting your kitten’s respect and trying to change adult cat's bad behavior requires consistency and patience. Possibly you love your cat, so the last thing you want is to seem like the enemy - someone to be disliked or even feared.

How is it possible to train your cat so his behavior is acceptable in your territory and still remain friends? The answer is not to let him rule - your cat will never respect you if he feels he is the boss.

Your cat needs to understand who is boss and you need to gain his trust and affection at the same time.
The simple rule is to reward positive behaviors and show lack of approval of things your kitten is doing and you don’t like. This means that your cat must be rewarded positively with treats and cuddles when he does things that you approve of. But when he insists on doing things he knows you don't like, you must remain calm, but just as determined to get your way, as he is to get his way.

This behavior is rooted in their childhood - from the time they are kittens, cats will obey the authority of the queen cat - their mother. So this is the role you have to adopt in the cat's life.

One way to do this is to carry the kitten around by the scruff of his neck occasionally. Don’t panic - this is the natural way your cat’s mother would have moved him from the place she doesn’t like the kitten to stay. That specific place on the cat’s body - the scruff of the neck is the loose skin on the back of the neck.
Because it is loose, it is easy to grab and what is important it doesn’t hurt either kitten or grown cat to be carried this way.

Notice when you pick up your cat like this he will suddenly go limp and just hang there – usually not protesting. That is what he would do if his mother had him in her mouth by the scruff.
If your cat is no longer a kitten, he will let you carry him by the scruff without complaint.

This is the technique you need to apply when you find your “bad” kitty doing things he shouldn't do. Just pick him up by the scruff of the neck and put him down away from his mischief.

Make sure your kitty has plenty of toys to play with, so that he is not bored and he will be a better-behaved cat, too. Soft and squeaky toys will keep his attention focused on play instead of mischief.
You may but you don’t have to buy special toys, because even a cardboard box or large paper bag to creep into will entertain him for hours.

Gaining respect is important part of your kitten training, because this will make your life together much easier.

Cat litter training

Main is cat litter training. Can you imagine something worse than your cat making the toilet on your best sofa? This is why litter box training is one of the most important things to train your cat or little kitten you own.

Cats are naturally clean animals so, usually naturally they don’t have a problem of not understanding where is the litterbox, how and why to use it. However some cats do have problem with starting to use litterbox and need your patient training.

What is the easiest way to do it? After the meal, place the cat on the litter box – it will not take long for the cat to understand it.

Why cat needs basic training despite of their independent and wild nature?

If you want to live together in happy relationship with your cat, there are some things that your cat needs to learn, because owning a cat should be more pleasure than fight and frustration.

If you let your cat to be in control of your household, there will be more frustration than pleasure.

Once cats are grown it is hard to break them of certain unwanted habits, so start while they are young and keep it up. Don't let them get away with behavior that is not acceptable to you.

So, what training your cat needs to make your life together long term and pleasurable?

- Toilet training.

- If you live in an apartment, you may need to train your cat to lead so that you can take him outside.

- Preventing or stopping your cat from scratching the furniture.

- If you travel a lot and wish to take your cat with you, travel training is a must.
